In order to understand Khaver's work one needs to know something of this enigmatic woman. Although described by some as "moonstruck,"she is indeed a passionately imaginative, self-taught individual. For as long as she can remember,Khaver has always wanted to be an artist, (with short bouts of wanting to be a nun, an astronaut, a hermit, a permanent member of a Kibbutz , a shoemaker, a carpenter...).

As a child, enchanted by life and its mysteries, she could not reconcile the black and white perspective that prevailed. It is a sentiment she feels more now than ever, living in a world where words matter much but mean very little, whether in the private or public arena. None of us exists in a vacuum.Where and how we live is inseparable from how our ancestors lived. In order to progress as individuals and societies we must balance looking back with forging the future. Progression, as the Chinese proverb states is not being able to fly or sail the seas but simply walk the Earth in peace.

Khaver's work is informed by her living life as a constant enthusiast, despite overtones of " not belonging." She confesses to being unashamedly obsessed with the heart and all things circular. In science, colour is a sensation experienced through the eyes because of the differing wavelength of lightwaves. To Khaver colour is a medium through which she expresses emotion felt in the heart. The metaphors she offers the viewer, peppered with hearts, circles and the occasional teapot, strike a chord universally. We all love, cry and laugh in the same language.

For Khaver the value of life is in the human experience of the ineffable-when the heart and mind turn harmoniously towards the Absolute.Where words fail, her work provides a remedy. Her favourite quote, " Hearts find peace in the rememberance of God." from the Quran appears constantly in her work.

"I have drawn and painted many circles in my life. I've gone round in circles just to explain my view point. I've even driven round and round roundabouts, just for the fun of it, but there's one circle that intrigues me most. One that will complete itself with or without my active participation It is the Great Circle of Life. One day, my body will return to its humble beginnings, the earth. My spirit will rise and soar above the clouds to its Noble Source. One thing I do know is that I was created with love and with love I must complete my circle." KHAVER IDREES.

In E.M.Forster's novel,A PASSAGE TO INDIA , Dr Aziz and Fielding have a brief conversation...

"Your emotions never seem in proportion to their objects, Aziz."

"Is emotion a sack of potatoes, so much to the pound, to be measured out? Am I a machine? I shall be told I can use up my emotions by using them next."

To believe in God or in a guiding force because someone tells you to is the height of stupidity. We are given senses to receive our information with. With our own eyes we see, and with our skin we feel. With our intelligence, it is intended that we understand. But each person must puzzle it out for himself or herself. SOPHY BURNHAM

WORDS FOR IT

I wish I could take language

And fold it like cool, moist rags.

I would lay words on your forehead.

I would wrap words on your wrists.

"There, there,"my words would say-

Or something better.

I would ask them to murmur,

"Hush"and "Shh,shhh,it's all right."

I would ask them to hold you all night.

I wish I could take language

and daub and soothe and cool

Where fever turns yourself against you.

I wish I could take language

And heal the words that were the wounds

You have no names for.

The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt in the heart.
